    I'm a bit late here - hopefully you already have a new ride. If not, be sure to really look for a 29er. I have found them to be great for beginners - lots of room for error on rough stuff, and a more stable ride. Good luck!

    I started out on a Gary Fisher Wahoo... It retailed at about $550 and was very reliable. It was a good stepping stone. Hardtails are definitely the way to go if you are looking to safe some dough.
